40 odd days into lockdown, I've been calling a friend of mine that I have been taking to football for a couple of seasons, about once a week, just to catch up and make sure he's ok.
He has a dog which he is able to take for a walk every day, gets him out of the house, I say house, he lives 3/4 of the way up a 14 storey block of flats. So he's getting out with his dog and getting his exercise every day but he's bored.
Him and his dad don't have broadband or sky or any extras to 'normal' tv, so his viewing is limited. Everytime I speak to him he says, when's football going to start up again (oh, I forgot to mention he follows Liverpool!)
Of course nobody knows when, how or if they are going to finish the season. I think that they must; it's only fair on all the teams that have invested so much into it, not just money, but time, energy, jobs
and now they are suggesting finishing the season at neutral grounds and not have relegations. But that means that you don't get any promotions either, so what is there to play for, except to say that you have fulfilled your fixture list!
Tranmere are sitting in the relegation zone, we want to finish so that we can get out of it. We were on our best run of the season and we now have a new pitch (Lets hope that helps us!) and then of course there's Bolton, they started the season on minus 12 points. If there's
no relegation, then there was not really any punishment, so would they start next season on minus 12 points again?
Let's be fair, Liverpool have won the Premier League; but they should still have to play all the games. They are not going to get another season like it. They may win it again next season or the year after, but not in the same emphatic style.
If they do play the games, which ever league, they could play them at smaller grounds so as not require so many staff to be on hand, as obviously there need to be some people there as there always is when they play games behind closed doors. Even if it's only to get the ball back when it goes in the stand.
I've told my friend that even when they do start back up again, we can't go. We may not be able to go to a game for a long time.
Personally I think that they will play out the season, all 4 divisions and have relegations and promotions, it will have to be behind closed doors, that's obvious, but there was talk of televising all of the games
Then the Mayor of Liverpool comes out with the 'fans will still turn up at Anfield when they win it, so you should just give it to them' And what, you don't think that there'll turn up at Anfield to celebrate if you just give it to them?.
Anyway, it's Star Wars Day (May the fourth), just thought I'd say!
