In 1992 The
Premier League was formed by The F.A. with all 22 clubs in Division
One of the Football League resigning en masse to become founder
members. All the Divisions of the Football League were renamed Second becoming First etc.
The Football League Championship Trophy is still contested but it's
only the equivalent of winning the old Second Division Title, but with
promotion into the Premier League.
This was done
with the main intention of getting more money, through Television
rights, Sponsorship and Advertising.

League was suspended during both World Wars, and regional leagues were
set up as many players were conscripted to fight. |
