55 minutes into the 6th round tie at St James's Park on 9th March, Newcastle were losing 3-1 to Nottingham Forest.
To make matters worse they had just had Pat Howard sent off.
Some of the crowd decided that they had had enough and 500 or so invaded the pitch, Two Forest players were attacked and referee Gordon Kew was forced to take the players off the pitch.
When the police eventually restored calm and play was resumed, Forest were so shell shocked that they conceded three late goals and Newcastle won 4-3
However the F.A. decided that the game should be replayed at a neutral ground, This was drawn 0-0 and Newcastle eventually scraped through 1-0 in a third match.
