The Europa Conference League was introduced at the start of the 2021/22 season to replace act as a third tier competition when the Europa League was reduced from 48 to 32 teams.
The League format gives qualifying clubs more games and so gives the opportunity to generate more money.
In addition, clubs who exit the Europa League the end of the First Group Stages join the Europa Conference League.
The Intertoto Cup having been discontinued, those who formally qualified, now join the Europa League or the Europa Conference League.
The Winners of the Europa Conference League qualify for the Europa League the following season.
